A piece from Sp!ked on the closing of all those Starbuck's shops and the Schadenfreude of the anti-globalists, interesting reading as it really shows that Sp!ked comes out of the Marxist tradition.

Dateline 1947 . . . Orson Wells' The BAT-MAN premiers. It almost happened, with Marlena Dietrich as Catwoman and Basil Rathbone as the Joker. I want that DVD from an alternate universe . . . (Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] princeofcairo for the heads up.)

From around the web.

Ancient Irish breweries discovered? Sounds like a fun way to spend a Summer day to me.

Real world superheroes, making a difference, in costume!

Expand (or check) your vocabulary with 75 Words Every Science Fiction Fan should know. I managed about 85%, including knowing some of them under variant names.

Scenes from the BBC's Hannibal Series starring Alexander Siddig as Hannibal! I like the battle staging where, while lines do get broken and you have a confused melee, groups of soldiers of the same side tend to keep close to each other rather than charging off randomly.

Today is the 44th anniversary of the first broadcast of Doctor Who!

Almost done watching the 3rd season of the new Who and enjoying it immensely (especially Blink) though I am thinking we could do with a season without Daleks.

The single best story from the New Twilight Zone series, available here on YouTube. Go watch, it is less than 8 minutes and worth every second.

So, yesterday, we went off to see the Atlanta Rollergirls! [livejournal.com profile] forvrin, [livejournal.com profile] kawakaze, Laura and I headed off on our big adventure.

[livejournal.com profile] forvrin was kind enough to drive us all, so we headed from Athens to Stone Mountain, a route no one had really taken before, on our way to the Imperial Chinese Garden restaurant. There we met up with [livejournal.com profile] laughingfang who very generously treated us all to dinner. The ICG does not actually have any gardens but does have a fountain in the main dining room and really tasty food.

We arrived as the rink opened, found out how things worked, watched the warm up, ran across some customers from Tyche's Games and an old customer, Tom, who is now a referee for the Classic City Rollergirls! Yes, we have roller derby in Athens too! They are just getting started though.

Just before the match started, James, another friend from Athens, showed. It was the Denim Demons in a serious put down of Apocalypstix, close through the first third, but then the Demons pulled away and could not be stopped. Jon and his brother (Jeff?) showed up after the first third so we had a group of gamers in for the show. The venue was very hot (300+ people, one of the hottest days of the years so far and no air conditioning) and the acoustics were painful, but apart from that, it was great fun! A really interesting sport and everyone seemed to have a good time. (You can see my handful of photos here.)

Then, back to Athens, via a stop at Dairy Queen, we got in at around 10:30 and promptly fell into bed. Thanks again to [livejournal.com profile] forvrin for driving!

Since visiting the Rat City Rollergirls page, I have found myself wanting to go to the Roller Derby. It is such a piece of Americana, I cannot be want to go and see it live.

Luckily, the Atlanta Rollergirls play nearby. So, we, and whoever wants to join us are going to the Roller Derby on Sunday, 10 June! The Denim Demons play Apocalypstix.

If we have fun we will probably go back in July to watch the visiting Rat City Rollergirls team play. In any case, expect an after action report.

And if you want to come along, let us know! Geek Pride people!

Did you know that Seattle has its own Roller Derby League? I did not. Even better, Renton-based Wizards of the Coast, advertises D&D there!
