Strange weekend. Continued to clear things out of the bedroom and generally organize the house. Had our friends who are moving to California over for one last dinner. Did some yardwork.

We also watched some more Deadwood. The next two episodes calm down a bit after the manic cursing of the first two and starts to focus a bit more on an actual plot rather then just establishing the characters. I will keep watching.

Got out to see Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. It struck me as a collection of wonderful scenes only very loosely tied together with a plot but it sure swept one along for the ride . . . Excellent action, good acting, great special effects (especially makeup/character-wise), and is not that why we we see this movies after all? I have some minor quibbles but it was a fun ride. Now we just have to wait until next year for At World's End. My grade: B+

To help me catch up on bad super hero movies, we rented The Fantastic Four. Which I enjoyed more then Laura, naturally I suppose. It took some liberties with the background which I found annoying (especially the rewrite of Doom). But the emergence of the powers for the characters was very well done and my favorite part of the movie. Not a great movie but better then I had expected. My Grade: C/C+

Deadwood

I have been thinking about Deadwood and wondering why the profanity in the series does not bother me that much. I was startled at first, and agree that many sentences were over-expanded by expletives, but it did not bother me much.

Perhaps it is because I embrace profanity as a functional and useful part of language? I know I am frequently chided by friends for its over use - especially when tired. I remember once being shy about using 'the F word'...

I think I
a) became desensitized while working food service and being the only female on all male crews
and b) decided that I was not going to allow profanity to have power over me.

The latter came about when an older neighbor boy taught my six year old to call me a "f**king c*nt"" - without the **s of course. (I am at work.) Ignoring the profanity was the only way to defuse the powerful reaction it elicited in me.

Since then I have claimed power over the words. I suppose I should try to remember that not everyone is in control of these often hurtfully applied verbs and nouns.
