Watched the first DVD of HBO's Deadwood series. It had been on my list of things to watch for a while and playing Deadlands again got it bumped up the queue. It is set in the town of Deadwood, which is not only any law, a truly wild place. Now, I am not against a little swearing in a show if it adds to the setting, but when the amount of swearing starts to slow down the dialog, then, it has gone to far. The series goes beyond gritty, it is positively gravelly. And Ian McShane plays the most evil character I have ever seen portrayed. But it was interesting, however, I am not yet sure if I want to watch more . . .

Sunday was devoted to cleaning and moving things in preparation of tearing up the carpet in the master bedroom. Oh, and watching the final game of the World Cup.

Deadwood is a gritty, nasty show. It never stays in the same place too long. Each show takes place over the span of 24 hours in the camp, and usually after a block of shows, things have noticeably changed in the camp. The cast, crew, and writers do an admirable job of making the town _feel_ like it's in transition, not just tell you that it is.

I've found I got used to the dialogue, but my threshold for the f-word is probably a little higher than yours. However, there's some wonderfully clever wordplay and monlogue construction going on, and I don't know as the show would work as well without the cursing.

Wikipedia on the use of profanity in Deadwood

As I said, it was not the profanity per se but the amount of it. When a three sentence exchange takes more than a minute because of the number of times "cock-sucker" is used, it gets old fast. That is just poor writing or writing to shock, it does not aid the setting or the story, in my mind.

I guess I will give it some more time to develop then before deciding one way or the other.

geez, I'd have thought that you'd be desensitized by now. You're around me so much, after all ;)
