Sunday of Media

Well, not all of Sunday, but mostly.
Saturday was work followed by Laura's D&D campaign in the evening.
On Sunday we went out to the Happy Valley Pottery sale to visit
coffeebadass and look around. Lots of interesting handmade things there. We watched a glass goblet being blown which was very interesting.
Then off to the movies! We watched X-Men: The Last Stand or X3 take your choice. Solid, but not really exceptional special effects (Hollywood has jaded us all), good acting in the rare scene where acting was possible, and a terrible, terrible script and plot. No continuity from the previous two X-Men films. Ill thought out plot devices. And, worse of all, everyone was acting like complete idiots. Just bad. My Grade: D /C-
We then watched the first DVD of Bottle Fairies. A fun and frighteningly cute anime about a group of four fairies (who live in bottle) who are trying to learn what it means to be human (or at least Japanese) and it follows them month by month. Each episodes is only about twelve minutes long though. Silly and fun.
The Studio Ghibli's Whispers of the Heart which, even for its lack of the fantastic, may now be my favorite of the Studio Ghibli films. It was just good, about finding your place in the world and striving for what you want to do. A lovely story, sad and funny, uplifting and thoughtful. My Grade: A
The night's viewing ended with The Draughtsman's Contract, a dark story set shortly after the Glorious Revolution (so, around 1672). A story of betrayal, sexual politics, deception and art. Very good but not to everyone's tastes I would imagine. It is interesting as the the director (who was also the writer) deliberately conceals information from the viewer, forcing the viewer to draw their own conclusions. Very well acted, filmed in Kent with the outlandish costumes of the period. My Grade: B+
