Been a good weekend for movies. Saw two on DVD and one in the theatre.
As our usual Saturday night D&D game was canceled, we watched Alexander. I am not a fan of Oliver Stone and this movie does not change my opinion at all. Some very nice visuals, and the Macedonians all having Irish accents was amusing, but the movie did not hold together. The main actors were not as strong as they needed to be, while some of the supporting cast was very good. The choice of what part of the historical record to portray were interesting too (and did not always coincide with my memories of the sequence of events). Still, worth watching for the phalanx in action. My Grade: C
On Sunday we went out to see The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. I am not sure about the choice of opening sequence but otherwise, I enjoyed almost all of the movie. Tilda Swinton was brilliant as the White Witch, the four child actors were great, and James McAvoy was a delightful Mr. Tumnus. The special effects were good and I found the battle sequence more satisfying then the ones in Alexander as I could actually tell what was happening in the battle. A good compliment to my memories of the book. Oh and Jim Broadbent was excellent in his role. My Grade: A-
We just finished watching The Aviator, my favorite of the Martin Scorsese films I have seen. Leonardo DiCaprio is quite good as Howard Hughes and there are a multitude of strong cameos through the movie. A good reminder that Howard Hughes was a genius, a flawed insane genius, but a genius all the same. Nicely done period/bio piece. My Grade: B+
