Just finished The Dark Ascent, the third book in this series by Walter H. Hunt (the other two being, in order, The Dark Wing and The Dark Path). It is mixed military SF with mysticism and some hero questing, the particular mix depending on the book (the first being heavily military, the second mystic and the third a bit of everything). Of the three, I still like the first book best but this one was really good too, I did not care for the second book much and almost stopped reading the series there but I am glad I did not.

[livejournal.com profile] haikujaguar recommended them and called the main alien race (the Zor) in them 'dragons' and some of the aspects of the Zor have been duly filtered back into the dragons of the Sea of Stars, for good or ill. Providing the explanation for why High Draconic is so difficult for non-Dragon to master at the very least.

Other books I have read this year that I recommend (I am sure there are others that I have forgotten as well):

Daughter of Empire by Janny Wurts and Raymond Feist, very well done pseudo-Oriental fantasy. A superb read, mixing culture, politics, betrayal and a touch of magic. The sequels (forming the Empire Trilogy) are: Servant of Empire and Mistress of Empire which get progressively weaker in my opinion though still interesting reads.

The Malazan Book of the Fallen: Guardians of the Moon (Vol 1) and Deadhouse Gates (Vol 2) by Steven Erikson, the first two books of a decology (ten-book series). Very complex but fascinating and dark fantasy, an effort to read but well worthwhile. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series as it releases.

It seems there should be more, but for the moment, I will leave it as above and add more in a later post as I recall them.

Mmmm, Sea of Stars. I miss playing Constantine. I wish I could say when I could be up there again.
