Last night watched the premier episode of the new and finished watching the new Might Stalker and finished watching the new Battlestar Galactica miniseries. Both are considerable revisions of their source material, I will start with the unsuccessful one first:

Night Stalker, the new Carl Kolchek is driven to find out what was responsible for killing his wife, because he knows it was something supernatural and once he has all the information he will force the world to recognize the TRUTH! Stuart Townsend (who I quite liked as Dorian Gray in LXG) is unlikable and unsympathetic as Kolchek. His partner, Perri, seasoned crime reporter, becomes increasingly the screaming girl who need to be rescued as the episode wears on. The plot was alright but nothing special. The thing is, if this had not taken the Night Stalker mantle, it would be an alright paranormal investigation show, but compared to the original . . . I will probably continue to watch it when I have time though. It does have potential, a little.

But Darren McGavin had such charm as Kolchek, a reporter who was only trying to report the truth of the matter. It was not his fault that he keep running across weird supernatural things . . . Well, at least having the new series may lead to the original being released on DVD.

Battlestar Galactica on the other hand, is a bold rework of the original story that radically improves on its source material. It applies modern technology and logically extropolates what sort of enemy the Cylons would be: masters of computer and electronic warfare. So obvious. When the Cylons attack, they pull no punches using atomic weapons from the start and fighting a genocidal war against the humans. It was excellent, showing the Cylons as enemies to be feared and that the surviving humans had no chance at survival except to flee . . . escorted by the last surviving battlestar of the first Cylon war. A solid piece of TV science fiction that hits almost all the right notes while paying homage to the original series (mostly in name and design elements). I will definitely be watching more in the future.
