Laura and I just returned from seeing Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Excellent, like Big Fish this movie plays to Tim Burton's strengths, a sense of the fantastic and a sentimental story. The special effects, especially the Oompa-Loompas and the factory as a whole, are wonderful and spot on. The acting is universally good, Johnny Depp makes an excellent Willy Wonka, sinister yet innocent, creepy and kind, all at the same time. Grandpa Joe was spot on and all of the child actors (especially the 'bad nuts') turned in solid performances. The music, by Danny Elfman, was wonderful, the Oompa-Lompa songs especially. Great un was had by all, the pacing stumbled in one or two places but it all wrapped up well. My Grade: B+/A-
After the movie, we did some shopping and picked up a copy of the animated Clone Wars season I, which we promptly watched once we had put the shopping away. Excellent work, using the medium to great effect and introducing characters (like General Grievous) who would be thrown away in Episode III. Fun and well worth picking up, very inspiring for Ben's Wushu Star Wars campaign. My Grade: B
And, yes, I have squeezed in some writing on my AEG project too.
