Review - Historical Biographical FIlms
May. 10th, 2007 02:51 pmSort of, anyway. They are films about historical figures anyway . . .
Michael Collins about one of, some would say the most important, leaders of the IRA after the Easter Rising of 1916. Collins masterminded the IRA's successful campaign against the British during the Anglo-Irish War (1919-1921). He is played here by Liam Neeson, with Alan Rickman as Eamon deValera. The history is acceptable, except for the total lack of context and the fact that from the Irish view, so the British are presented as one-dimensional villains. The acting is good, though an unneeded (and non-factual) love subplot distracts from the meat of the story. My Grade: C+/B-
Marie Antonette starring Kristen Dunst as the title character. Visually beautiful with magnificent costumes but meandering and, essentially, plotless. Interesting use of modern music too, Marie looking at dresses and jewelry while eating sweet to Bow-wow-wow's "I Like Candy" was quite mind boggling for example. Ultimately unsatisfactory. My Grade: C-
