The original of The Ladykillers with Alec Guinness as the Professor and a young Peter Sellers as well. Better then the Tom Hanks remake, a perfect example of doing more with less, though the ending was a little rough. My Grade: B-
The Island, more schlock science fiction. What started out well and could have been an interesting debate on bio-ethics and cloning became just another action-adventure-chase movie with out heroes having more luck then could be justified. Well acted with solid special effects, but the plot became increasingly contrived as the movie dragged on. My Grade: C-/C
The Thing from Another World, the 1951 original. So good. Primative special effects, good (if now dated and cliched) plot and superb character interaction. Everyone seemed real and you cared about them and their predicament. Nicely paced. And, to my knowledge, the origin of the catchphrase "Watch the skies." My Grade: B+/A-
Also watched the first season opener of HEX on BBC, which has a lot of potential and I would have really enjoyed it except for the fact that there was a commercial break every three minutes! (OK, maybe not quite that bad, but close.)
