Back from Dragon*Con
Sep. 7th, 2004 04:51 pmAnd vowing to try and use more html coding in my journal, let us see how it works out.
Dragon*Con was great fun as usual, even though we only stayed through Sunday (also as usual). Arrived by noon on Friday, checked straight into our room with parking onsite, picked up our badges it all was as easy as cake.
Did not do much on Friday besides drift around through the dealer's rooms and art show, had dinner with some other friends and generally relaxed. Attended the last half of a late panel on the Young Ones which was . . . OK.
Saturday, was up early to get ready for the parade. Having foolishly agree to help out the Doctor Who contingent by dressing as the Master. Ended up being great fun. The four of us (Andy as the 7th Doctor -McCoy-, a friend of his as the 3rd -Pertwee- and Ace) were following the Ghostbusters and in front of Peter Davidison's car. Peter was the 5th Doctor, for those of you keeping score at home. Hot and silly but fun. A weird sense of community comes from being surrounded by stormtroopers, elves and superheroes as your march down the streets of downtown Atlanta . . . or at least it is a weird feeling.
I could not stay in costume though, the black woolen coat was just too heavy and hot for me. Went to the Doctor Who panel, which turned out to be a Peter Davidson speaks event. which was fine because he is a fun bloke to listen to. A lot of his non-Doctor Who TV work, like Campion, is now releasing on DVD including some shows (like the Tomorrow People) which he wishes would just be forgotten. The BBC is going to be releasing a new series of Doctor Who next year, the details of which remain (deliberately) obscured. But it will be nice to have the Doctor back.
Later, went to a talk by Warren Ellis which was pretty freeform with the crowd asking him questions and him replying and occasionally pontificating. Ellis has a fascinating worldview and a head stuffed full of weird and twisted information, making it a highly enjoyable hour.
Things I can remember semi-clearly (apologies if they are paraphrased):
On the US Presidential election: "Sorry mate, you're doomed."
"If the democrats had wanted to win this election, they wouldn't have nominated a zombie with a badger stapled to his head."
In general (having just rambled about 'Ultimate Stilt Man'): "After you've spoken do you ever think to yourself 'Where the fuck did that that come from?'"
More later . . .
