Have not been watching all that much lately due to a variety of factors, but over the last two or three weeks, we have watched:
Unfaithfully Yours, a black comedy starring Rex Harrison, which suffers from an initial lack of focus and poor pacing but does have some very funny moments. The plot is that Harrison's character comes to believe his wife is cheating on him and ponders, via flights of fancy, what to do about it. Of course, his imaginary plans do not work as well in practice. My Grade: C-/C
The Librarian: Quest for the Spear, very silly, very cheesy action/fantasy movie about the Library, the one where they keep Pandora's Box, Excalibur, and so on and so on. The Spear of the title is (surprise!) the Spear of Destiny. Very fluffy but amusing. Bob Newhart, Jane Curtin and Kelly Hu have supporting roles. My Grade: C-
Iron Jawed Angels, based on the young woman who spearheaded the final act of the fight for Women's Suffrage in the early 20th C. Not bad history, good period piece with solid costuming and scenery and well acted. Acceptably plot though the movement forward in time is not well signaled. At times brutal, as was the opposition to the suffragettes, worth seeing if it is a piece of history one is interested in. It is easy to forget that the right of women to vote is less than a century old in the US. My grade: C+
30 Days of Night, the town of Barrow, Alaska is so far North that it has 30 days of night (at least, it does in this movie). So, naturally, it would be a playground for vampires . . . and so it becomes in the movie. It is a vampire movie, but the vampires are portrayed as vicious, almost feral, predators. The pacing is tight once it gets going and keeps you from noticing the holes in the plot. The vampires are fast, cruel and scary with a strong screen presence and the blood flows freely (though it only hits a PG13). Worth seeing if you like horrorish movies. My Grade: C+
