Once I fall behind on these things, it keeps getting more and more difficult to catch up . . .
Over the weekend we watched:
800 Bullets, a Spanish movie involving a stunt man from the era of the Spanish westerns, his grandson, and Texas, Hollywood, the 'town' where the Westerns were filmed and now a tourist trap. The movie undergoes several shifts of tone throughout and it starts out rather slow but ultimately it is quite satisfactory. My Grade: C/C+
My Super Ex-Girlfriend, a romantic comedy with superheroes (well, a superheroine). A fun movie, more so for superhero fans I suspect, but I think that most people can enjoy it. Eddie Izzard plays Professor Bedlam and deserved more screen time. My Grade: C+
Read two GNs:
forvrin loaned us Runaways set in LA and is based on the idea "what if your parents were supervillains", very well written (surprisingly so for a Marvel Universe title) with minimal cameos from the Marvel stables. But it makes very good use of the Marvel universe as a backdrop making it seem much more real. Nice art style too.
The American Way, telling the story of the Civil Defense Corps, a government sponsored superteam in the early 1960s. Some major plot holes, some anachronistic language and a lot of heavy handed moralizing about racism, but not a bad read. Certainly sparks some ideas if I ever get back to my 1960s Supers game.
