I have a Kickstarter for my Sea of Stars Campaign Setting

Your support would be welcome.

It is for the Pathfinder rules set but should be adaptable to most fantasy settings and we will be doing conversion guides to FATE, D&D and, if we hit the stretch goals, Savage Worlds and 13th AgeYou can find more information and offer support here.

There is a free adventure linked on the Kickstarter page you can download to get a feel for the setting.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Visit Tschai - for Free!

At the Jack Vance Official Website you can get the Chasch, first book of the Tschai - Planet of Adventure series for free in ebook format (and a ton of his books as ebooks too). Certainly worth grabbing as Vance's culture building skills are phenomenal.

Sorry for the vanishing

Since I am doing most of my internet posting at my Sea of Stars RPG Design Journal, JL and DW have gotten a bit neglected. Sorry all. Will try to be better about that.

Just ran a crazy four-part Legend of the Five Rings mini-campaign (framework here) which went surprisingly well and has hardened me for GenCon where I am running seven (yes, 7) sessions of the L5R RPG for AEG (the company that makes the game). Wish me luck!

The Eighth Doctor

Got the Fox/BBC Doctor Who movie for Christmas and watched it last night, much better than I remembered but still not great. McGann would have made an excellent Doctor, shame that the plot of the movie was so very weak. Still, surprised to see how much of the movie was incorporated into the New Who.

I am the 00.0000000003%

In the end, we are each a minority of one. While I support a few of the ideas of the Occupy Wall Street crowd, I find their devotion to group-think, group identity and equality of outcomes worrying.

I am 00.0000000003% of the United States population and I am an individual.

Speak Out with your Geek Out

This is, barely, not too late. I encourage you to join the upcoming Speak Out with your Geek Out, from the 12th to the 16th of September, let your geek flag fly and show people how much you love your hobbies and obsession. Hopefully we can turn this into a yearly celebration of geekiness in all things. Thanks to Monica Valentinelli for getting this rolling.

And my geekiness can mostly be found at the Sea of Stars RPG Design Journal these days.

Guadalcanal Diary and my first AthFest

So, we have lived in Athens, Georgia, for 13 years and last night was the first time we attended AthFest, the yearly festival of music and arts. We went down because Guadalcanal Diary had reformed for their 30th Anniversary and were playing two shows, the first at AthFest! It was a great show with many of our favorite songs being played (including Lips of Steel which was the very first song of theirs we had heard). Much fun.

Unfortunately, being a free outdoor concert, we had to contend with lots of people wandering aimlessly through the area, talking, getting in the way, smoking, drinking and so on. Still, well worth it to see Guadalcanal Diary who were rocking and having a good time, playing three (!) encores! We grabbed t-shirts and their live CD (from 1998!) which completes my collection of their easy to get hold of music.

Here is a video for their song Always Saturday which I think if the only actual, official video they have. But several other of their songs are up on YouTube as well. Give them a listen.

My week so far and an interesting article on Nuclear Power

Been an odd week, was called in for jury duty on Monday and assigned to a jury to meet on Tuesday. Tuesday saw the case which was short, only two witnesses testified, but then it took us four hours of deliberation to reach a verdict (on a six-person jury no less) I was the foreperson so I got called out several times to say to the judge that we still had not reached a decision which was a tad stressful . . .

But now happily back at work at Tyche's Games where the stress in much lower.

George Monbiot writes an interesting article: The unpalatable truth is that the anti-nuclear lobby has misled us all.

Review - Sucker Punch (movie)

After the short summary it gets a bit spoilery, so be careful if that is important to you. You can find it here on my RPG journal.

Review - Steam-Powered: Lesbian Steampunk Stories

Steam•Powered: Lesbian Steampunk Stories, an anthology edited by JoSelle Vanderhooft and published by Top Shelf, an imprint of Torquere Press Publishers.

This anthology consists of fifteen stories mixing lesbians and steampunk in various concentrations. For me, steampunk is mixing the untapped potential of the new sciences and technologies of the industrial age through the 1920s to the punk ethos from cyberpunk, in other words how the new technology changes and oppresses the world. By my definition, three of the stories do not fit into the steampunk genre but they are still quite interesting all the same.

Vote Early, Vote Often (2010 edition)

Just got back from voting, early voting available in Georgia until Friday, take advantage of it if you can. Pleased to see a full slate of Libertarians for all of the state-wide posts.

As usual, I encourage people to vote for the party that best represents their views, especially if it is a 3rd party!

And to anyone out there in California, Just Say Now, vote yes on Prop 19.

Free Speech

The answer for speech you do not like is more speech. The answer to bad ideas is better ideas.

I often feel that some people go too far in their points of view, but I have no problem that they hold that point of view. My worldview is not so fragile that it cannot survive being challenged, in fact, I usually welcome such challenges when made in good faith and an open spirit of debate.

Do I get annoyed and even angry at those who hold what seem (to me) to be self-evidently foolish and destructive views? Of course. But I try not to take that out on the people involved. That does not help anyone.

Note: This is adapted from a reply to a friends post which is friends locked, but it seemed worthwhile to repeat in the current politically charged atmosphere.

Visiting Washington DC

Just got back last week from a trip to Washington DC, which as you no doubt know, is full of museums, galleries and history. We were staying in Alexandria, Virginia, fairly close to the Old Town area which is quite nice and an easy Metro ride away from the heart of DC.

Details of where we went and what we saw behind the cut )
