I have been thinking about Deadwood and wondering why the profanity in the series does not bother me that much. I was startled at first, and agree that many sentences were over-expanded by expletives, but it did not bother me much.
Perhaps it is because I embrace profanity as a functional and useful part of language? I know I am frequently chided by friends for its over use - especially when tired. I remember once being shy about using 'the F word'...
I think I a) became desensitized while working food service and being the only female on all male crews and b) decided that I was not going to allow profanity to have power over me.
The latter came about when an older neighbor boy taught my six year old to call me a "f**king c*nt"" - without the **s of course. (I am at work.) Ignoring the profanity was the only way to defuse the powerful reaction it elicited in me.
Since then I have claimed power over the words. I suppose I should try to remember that not everyone is in control of these often hurtfully applied verbs and nouns.
