Catching up on reviews, again
Feb. 21st, 2008 07:03 pmAgain, I have fallen behind on such.
Finished watching Rosemary and Thyme, Season 2, even better than the first season as they have the pacing right and they get to travel more. My Grade: B-
Moviewise we have watched:
Shoot 'Em Up, wow, just wow. Amazing (and amazingly silly) gunplay movie that is all about the fantastic acts of violence you can do with a gun but still has a anti-gun message wrapped up in it. Also, best use of vegetables as weapons. Ignore the plot, ignore the message, and just enjoy the ballet of violence. My Grade: B-
Silent Hill, based on a video game I have never played, very atmospheric and creepy, especially the abandoned mining town where it rains ash from a mine fire forever. Excellent special effects, filming and music, solid enough acting and a weak plot. Still, worth watching if you like horror. My Grade: C+
The Host, very weird Korean horror(ish) movie with some major anti-government and anti-American subtext. Plot is . . . not good, but the monster, very well drawn and creepy-scary. Not well paced and it seemed that you needed to be Korean to get some of the cultural subtext that important to the film. My Grade: C-
Elizabeth: the Golden Age, with Cate Blanchard continuing her role as Elizabeth. Amazing costumes, set and scenery, but my historian's mind keep nagging at me all through it. Enjoyable enough even with all that, though poor Sir Francis Drake only gets a cameo, we do get some good interaction with Doctor Dee. Worth watching just to enjoy the visuals. My Grade: C/C+
