Review - SF from the 80s and today
Feb. 4th, 2008 11:16 amWe went to see Cloverfield today at the early matinee (just us and four other people). Quite impressive, a new way to tell the giant monster movie, that is from the point of view of those fleeing from it, no big picture, no explanations, just terror and confusion. The acting, filming and special effects are all solid. There are several nice touches in the framing of the story too. My Grade: B-/B
However, Cloverfield is filmed as if from a handheld camera, making it very jumpy and (for me and Laura both) nausea inducing. Just a fair warning.
And on DVD Making Mr. Right which is the most 80s movie I have ever seen. 80s cloths, music, technology, sensibilities, and did I mention the clothes? It is really a RomCom with a SF twist, an android to be precise, both the android and his creator are played by John Malkovich. Nice light entertainment but nothing special. My Grade: C
