Dec. 7th, 2007 09:20 amWatched My Man Godfrey, the 1936 original, fun movie tapping it the gap between rich and poor during the depression with a very upbeat message about people. A good show. My Grade: C+
Series we finished watching recently:
Heroes, Season 1, interesting attempt to bring superheroes to television. The whole supers emerging in the modern world idea seems very popular at the moment and Heroes is an interesting take on that idea. Some good ideas and some good acting hampered by poor pacing and a weak plot that became increasing slapdash as the season went on. Still, worth watching to be part of the modern geek Zeitgeist. My Grade: C-
Torchwood, Series One, having seen this series through now, and many episodes twice, I am still not entirely sure of what I think about it. But the end of Series One, the actors are finally settling into their roles and the plots have evened out. There are some stand out episodes and some very blah ones but overall, worth seeing if you like the idea of X-Files by way of Doctor Who. Still think Torchwood 4 would make a great setting for an RPG. My Grade: C+/B-
Doctor Who, Series Three, well, I really enjoyed it but I also thought it was overall the weakest of the new Who. Though there were some superb episodes ("Blink" for example), the three-part season finale was just not that strong. The Master was great and the Master was terrible, he was over the top and amazingly evil and such, but I much prefer the cold and rational Delgado Master to the 'mad, bad and dangerous to know' Master of the later series. (I kept having flashback to the Doctor quote about the Master from the Deadly Assassin, "You would delay an execution to pull the wings off a fly.") But overall, still very enjoyable and fun. My Grade: B+/A-
Additional comment, I am so very tired of Daleks, 7 of the 41 new Who stories have featured Daleks as the villains and that is just too much. Please, no Daleks in Series Four!
