Reviews - Movies
Sep. 23rd, 2007 08:34 pmI know, I have fallen way behind on this. So, four movies, all foreign films, I have seen over the last three weeks:
'Breaker' Morant (Australian) set at the end of the Boer War. Involving the court martial of three Australian officers. Very grim as one would expect from the war that brought us the commando and the concentration camp. But well acted and a superb period piece. My Grade: B+/A-
Tampopo (Japanese),
forvrin called this a "Noodle Western" which is not a bad description, it is certainly all about food with a noodle shop as the focus. Lots of good pieces, many of which are rather random to the main story, but are all about food. Quite fun if occasionally confusing. My Grade: C+/B-
Alphaville (Froggy! Er, French), a science fiction story set in 1965 France . . . if that does not make sense, you will have to see the movie. It tries to create a sense of the future entirely through the dialog, the sets, clothes, weaponry, vehicles are all from the 'ultra-modern' 1960s. Very bizarre, the main character Lemmy Caution (what a great name) has been sent from 'the Outlands' to infiltrate Alphaville, a sinister city controlled by the ultra-computer, Alpha 60. It drifts between vaguely interesting and incomprehensible. My Grade: D+/C-
Black Sheep (New Zealand), a horror-comedy about the danger of genetically engineering sheep! The copy we saw was on VCD without the soundtrack, so it was a bit less than a perfect copy, but still quite amusing if occasionally absurdly gory. My Grade: C
