Weekend Reviews
Jun. 18th, 2007 07:41 pmCalm weekend, oversaw a Star Wars minis tournament on Saturday and did lawn cleanup and laundry (along with four short reviews) on Sunday.
Not a good weekend for movies, we watched:
Curse of the Golden Flower, a Chinese history epic starring Chow Yun-Fat. So it should have been brilliant right? No such luck. A plot rife to the point of confusion with treachery and betrayal becomes increasingly absurd. A few good fights and several impressive CGI battles cannot overcome the ponderous silliness of the ending. My Grade: C-
The Black Dahlia which tried entirely to hard to be Noir, juggling, and ultimately dropping, four distince plot threads. One of which actually involves the infamous Black Dahlia murder of 1947. It fails to hold together and simply fails at what it was trying to do. My Grade: D+/C-
A good weekend for finishing TV series on TV however, we watched the last episodes of:
Slings and Arrows, Season 1, a Canadian series about the disasters and (occasional) triumphs as a small region theater festival. Only six episodes long but a lot is packed into them. Very enjoyable. My Grade: B+/A-
Have Gun - Will Travel, Season 1, the adventures and business dealings of the man called Paladin. Tight, half hour episodes that are perfect for stealing as RPG adventure plots. A main character that is more interested in using his intelligence and oratory to solve problems, rather than his gun, though he knows how to use that too. A superb series and I have already ordered the next two seasons. My Grade: A-
