As well as reviews from the weekend.

Quiet day at Tyche's on Saturday and probably looking at a quiet week as it is Spring Break at UGA. So, come on down and visit me if you can.

Winter Court finally ended on Saturday as well. An enjoyable three months but now I have work to do.

On Sunday, went to see 300 with Laura, [livejournal.com profile] coffeebadass and Jayne (who has a LJ account but I do not know what it is). Visually quite stunning, though virtual scenery is not alway better than real scenery, with often amazing (if entirely fictional) costuming. Though my historian's soul often cried out in pain at this retelling of the Battle of Thermopylae and the events leading up to it. The battle scenes are by far the best part of the movie, the rest, well the rest of the movie has little to recommend it besides being pretty. It is a shame that the actual story of amazing heroism and duty has to be obscured by Miller's warped world-view. My grade: C+/B-

Afterward we hung out, drank coffee and talked. Which was very nice. We do not seem to do enough of things like that.

We have been watching the latest incarnation of Robin Hood on BBC America and caught Episode 2 on our return home. It is so bad, so very bad. Robin Hood is a socialist nobleman returned from and who now opposes the War in Iraq (oh, sorry, the Crusade) and is no longer willing to kill, instead using white hat archer tricks like shooting weapons out of people's hands. The Sheriff is two-dimensional villain, but rather fun, and Sir Guy (in a black leather long coat!) is only slightly better. I am going to keep watching because it is fascinating in its badness.

Afterward we watched Adaptation, one of those movies that proves that Nicolas Cage can act. A very strange movie about writing the screenplay for a movie among other things. Very meandering for the first two thirds and then takes an unexpected turn in the last third. Interesting, mostly, but only something to watch if you are in the mood for quasi-experimental cinema as it is very self-referential and odd. My Grade: C/C+
