Reviews movies and books
Oct. 30th, 2006 06:52 pmI realized that I have been very bad about reviewing books I have read of late, so I will do so here, after I review:
Thank You for Smoking, a dark comedy about a lobbyist for the smoking industry and the clashes he has with anti-smokers, his career, his family and a reporter. I wish it would have been a bit more supportive of the personal choice aspect of smoking, but equally it was not entirely big tobacco is evil. Very well written and tightly paced, very funny at times. Well worth seeing if you like black humour. My Grade: B
The Dark Wing, The Dark Path, The Dark Ascent and The Dark Crusade (to me, collectively, the Dark Wing series) by Walter Hunt. Solid quasi-mystical science fiction with a strong military theme (but it is not military SF). The primary alien race, the Zor, are exceptionally well drawn and have a very interesting culture. This was recommended to me by
haikujaguar and I have enjoyed the entire series, though I thought the second book (Ascent) was the weakest of the series and it almost lost me.
His Majesty's Dragon, Throne of Jade and Black Powder War (collectively the Temeraire series) by Naomi Novik. Short summary, the Napoleonic Wars with dragons! It works better than it has any right too, very engaging and Temeraire (the main dragon character) is quite delightful. Highly recommended.
My Faith in Frankie, a lovely little graphic novel about love, faith, small gods and demons. Simply fun. Read it!
