Disney Movies old and new
Mar. 6th, 2006 11:29 amOn Sunday, after clearing out part of the garage and doing a bit of repair work on the back doorway. Settled in to watch some movies. I will review them in the reverse order I watched them in.
The Black Hole, from 1979, I had been wanting to see this movie since it came out all those years ago. I have heard it was not good, but I was prepared to give it a fair shot, after all anything Disney did would suffer by comparison to Star Wars, right? Well, they were right, it is not a good movie, indeed I will go so far as to say that is is a bad movie. It starts off alright, but slowly sinks, the acting was wooden, the script terrible (and all pretense to science was abandoned by the last third) and the plot obvious. The only good things were the sets, spectacular in the vein of Fantastic Planet, and the special effect, which for 1979, were quite good. I wish there was something I could recommend about this movie but I really cannot think of anything. My Grade: D
Sky High from just last year. This was all good. A high school for the children of superheroes, who get sorted into two tracks: SUPERHEROES and sidekicks (sorry, "Hero Support").

So, yes, it was an 80s teen movie with superpowers (the soundtrack was all covers of 80s songs even). The cast was excellent, the adult actors hammed it up (Bruce Campbell as Coach Boomer, Linda Carter as Principle Powers and others) and the teen actors took their roles seriously. Good in-jokes for the comic crowd, solid special effects, obvious (but fun) plot. Sky High is going in my superhero movie collection as soon as I find an inexpensive DVD of it. My Grade: B+/A-
