Since I last updated, I have watched three movies, one in the theatre and two on DVD:
In the theatre: The Brother Grimm, Terry Gilliam's most coherent movie yet. It plays well to Gilliam's strength, presenting the fantasic, without letting it run away with the movie. I, however and naturally, found Gilliam's privileging of belief over reason (thus making reason the unreasonable choice) slightly annoying. But a fun movie all the same. It is the perfect movie for capturing the look of the Warhammer Fantasy setting (sans non-humans and chaos). My Grade: C+/B-
Laura, on the other hand, was quite enamored with the movie and thought it was wonderful. The two Daves, who came to the movie with us, seemed to like it as well.
On DVD: Samurai Fiction, a strange, recent (1998) samurai film. Has its moments, but a lot of the pieces just did not fit together for me. Good movie for L5R players and GMs though, has clan loyalty, the mistrust of ronin and some cool fights. My Grade: C/C+
Again, Laura liked this movie much more then I did.
On the Waterfront, part of my movies every American should see kick. Solid story about how the little guy can make a difference but standing up for what is right. I really like the sparse style of black and white films at times. A solid movie but not one I will feel the need to revisit anytime soon. My Grade: C+/B-
Updates on other things tomorrow.
