Watched Ghost World last night. Fun and interesting, if sometime depressing movie. A friend described it as "live action Daria" which is not a bad summary, though I think Enid (the main character) was far more mean spirited than Daria. Anyway, a solid teen angst movie set against a fascinating musical palette, ranging from a weird 60s Bollywood dance number during the opening credits to blues and modern alternative music. A soundtrack on my list to hunt down. I enjoyed it, you may too.
Ah, the debates, what a sham and a half. Nice to see that the art of the debate has been so successful packaged by the two main parties that real substance in no longer required. (Learn more at Open Debates.)
I watch a little of the first debate, over half of the second and missed the third entirely. But I have been reading all the transcipts, you can get them in nice pdfs from the BBC along with other election news.
My favorite quote from Debate three was Kerry talking about illegal immigration: "The fact is that we now have people from the Middle East, allegedly, coming across the border."
And apparently despite Kerry's statements of "I'll answer it straight to America. I'm not going to appoint a judge to the Court who's going to undo a constitutional right, whether it's the First Amendment, or the Fifth Amendment, or some other right that's given under our courts today -- under the Constitution." and "And I respect the Second Amendment and I will not tamper with the Second Amendment." Kerry seems to be an avid supporter of gun control, touting the so-called Assault Weapons Ban as a self evident good thing.
Now, I do not want to sound like a Bush supporter, it just that Kerry's statements above caught my eye.
I was amused that Bush was trying to portray himself as a classic small government conservative having presided over the largest increase in governmental intrusion and spending in recent memory. Does he really think that he will convince anyone that he wants a smaller government? But then, "No one every lost an election by underestimating the intelligence of the American people."
Blah, and this is why I have not been thinking to much about the debates.
