Reviews - Movies

Last night watched Maîtresse, a French film from 1976. It stars Gérard Depardieu, an actor who I had no strong feeling for before watching this film, who I now dislike as his character was such scum (and his acting was less than laudable). While it was interesting to watch, Depardieu's character, a small time hood, falls for a professional dominatrix, and proceeds to ruin her life. The interesting bits include the Dominatrix at work. The plot is thin and poorly constructed. At the end, I was just hoping that Depardieu's character would get waxed. My Grade: D+/C-

Today, we went off the see the third (and final?) pirates movie, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. Amazing and frustrating by turns, some plot-lines get resolved quickly, others get half-way resolved and are allowed to fade away into the action. And there is a lot of action! Though many good actors (including Chow Yun-Fat) are criminally misused. The special effects are first rate. My Grade: C/C+

I'm sorry Gerard Depardieu got ruined for you. He is a fine actor. But I understand. The Cowboys was made in the early 70s, and I *still* can't watch Bruce Dern in anything after his role in it. Not overly fond of Meryl Streep after Kramer vs. Kramer, either, for that matter.

I may get over it given time. Depardieu looks (and acts) much differently now.

What would you recommend that he has been in?

He did a very good, if slightly drawn-out version of Cyrano de Bergerac a few years ago. And when he was much younger, a trio of movies starting with one called Jean de Florette, that were very good.

He also has a minor part in Kenneth Branagh's four-hour version of Hamlet [g]. And he dubbed Branagh's Henry V for the French release...

Sorry, I'm really a Branagh fan who ran across Depardieu in that venue.
